A Wikipedia article notability assessment tests a subject against the general notability guideline and the specialised ones for biographies, organisations, products and creative works. Wikiagency LTD returns a written verdict, source by source, at no charge.
Last updated October 2026 by the Wikiagency LTD editorial team.
Different subjects are tested differently. A company is judged on organisation guidelines, a person on biography guidelines and a book or film on creative-work criteria, and each sets a different bar for coverage.
Our assessment names the guideline that applies, grades each source and tells you if the evidence is enough, nearly enough or not yet there.

Notability: the gatekeeping question for every article
Every new Wikipedia article faces the same gatekeeping question: does the subject belong in an encyclopedia? Wikipedia answers through its notability guidelines, a set of community-developed tests that look at published coverage rather than at personal opinion. If a subject has been the focus of substantial, independent, reliable coverage, it is presumed suitable. If it has not, the article is likely to be deleted regardless of how well it is written.
An article notability assessment is a rehearsal of that test before the draft is written. It answers the question honestly, with evidence, and tells you what to do next.
The general notability guideline in plain language
The guideline can be broken into its four conditions. The coverage must be significant, meaning it addresses the subject directly and in detail. It must be in reliable sources, meaning publications with editorial oversight. It must be independent, meaning not produced by the subject or anyone connected to it. And there must be enough of it, which usually means multiple sources rather than one.
Each condition excludes something. Brief mentions fail the first. Self-published sites and blogs fail the second. Press releases, sponsored posts and interviews that merely repeat the subject’s statements fail the third. A single feature article, however good, may fail the fourth.
Specialised guidelines for different article types
Organisations and companies are expected to have in-depth coverage that goes beyond routine announcements. Local companies need sources with more than local interest unless the coverage is substantial.People are assessed on independent coverage of their life and work, with additional criteria for specific fields such as academics, authors, athletes, politicians and entertainers.Creative works look for reviews and critical commentary in reliable outlets, and awards or significant adoption.Products and services are rarely independently notable unless widely covered; they often belong in the article about the company that makes them.Events require lasting significance and sustained coverage, not a short news cycle. What the assessment delivers
We return a written report containing the guideline we applied, a list of every source reviewed with its grade, an explanation of why sources failed where they did, a verdict, and a plan. The plan states whether to draft now, what would strengthen the case, and whether another subject, such as the organisation instead of its founder, may be better suited.
The report is written for non-specialists and can be shared with colleagues or clients to explain why a Wikipedia project is or is not recommended.
Editorial judgment in borderline cases
Not every case is clear. Notability guidelines are interpreted by editors, and some subjects sit near the line. In borderline cases, we consider how editors have treated similar subjects, how recent the coverage is, whether it is likely to grow and whether there are specialised criteria that apply. We also consider risk: a borderline article may survive review but be vulnerable to later deletion nominations.
When the case is borderline we say so and explain the trade-off, leaving the decision to you with the full picture in hand.
Why assessing before drafting saves money
Drafting a Wikipedia article requires research hours that are wasted if the subject fails notability. Assessment is a small, fixed effort that tells you whether to spend the larger one. For agencies advising clients, it is a form of due diligence. For organisations, it is a way to align expectations with reality before a project begins.
What you can do to strengthen notability
- Pursue genuine news: launches, research, partnerships and milestones that independent journalists find worth reporting.
- Contribute expertise to publications that publish commentary under editorial control, without paying for placement.
- Publish research or books that others review and cite.
- Take part in events and awards where independent bodies select participants.
- Keep a record of every independent mention.
None of these guarantees a page, but together they build the kind of record that supports one.
